Femicide in South Africa
There has been a surge of killings of women in South Africa. One of the popular cases is the murder of Karabo Mokoena by her ex-boyfriend who was later arraigned in court and charged.
This is just one case: according to statistics, a woman is murdered every four hours in South Africa, many of whom are killed by their intimate partners. These women also suffer other forms of violence including sexual violence.
Such violence has been attributed to violent misogyny, which needs to be addressed to ensure women are safe in South Africa and on the continent.
