Five African queens you did not know existed

Queen Tiye

Referred to as the most illustrious queen of Egypt, Tiye was born to nobles, Yuya and Tjuy. She became the wife of Pharaoh Amenhotep III and mother to Akhenaten and grandmother of Tutankhamun.

She is considered the matriarch of the Amarna Dynasty, which was marked by the reign of Akhenaten.  She had considerable influence in both her husband’s and son’s reigns, serving as their confidant. Her influence was so strong that many foreign dignitaries were willing to deal directly through her.

She is said to have died in 1338 BC.
