Uganda
Women in this East African country are among the most entrepreneurial in the world, with 33.8 per cent of businesses in this country belonging to women, according to the Index. These women have often been forced into entrepreneurship due to the hard times they faced in the past (the 1970s and 1980s). Those who could not travel outside to seek greener pastures had to stay around to support the family despite the challenges such as children to take care of. They have since survived and grown to become business owners, particularly in the small and medium enterprise (SME).
